Hi all,

I received this announcement via email yesterday and checked out the website.  This looks great!

Q:  Why in the world would a nursing home allow cameras to film everything that happens over the course of a year?

A:  To show the world a reality they won't see.
ALMOST HOME Sneak Preview (before it is seen by the nation on PBS)Wednesday, November 2nd 7pm in UWM's Zelazo Center meet the cast / Q&A with filmmakers check out almosthomedoc.org or call
414.229.4706 for more info

Three years in the making - right here in Milwaukee - Almost Home chronicles a year in the life of a vibrant retirement community implementing "culture change", a revolutionary new approach to the challenge of making nursing home life feel more like a home.  Told
through memorable characters and true-life drama, Almost Home is an inside, personal story that follows the lives of residents, their
families and those who care for them.

**Anyone have an idea how to get ahold of this before it's available to the rest of us (January 2006) that are not in Milwaukee?

TIA-

Yes! (none / 0)

Hi Jennifer --

We (the Pioneer Network) have been working with the filmmakers and AAHSA to develop a viewer's guide for the film. We're also working with the other national partners to help get community meetings and viewings organized.  Check out the post I wrote about it here: Almost Home

And in the spirit of Philadelphia brotherly love (and seeing as how you're at Penn), I received this e-mail from Brian Duke at WHYY.  Have you been in touch with him?

The Caring Community Coalition here in Philadelphia which was convened five years ago by WHYY, the public broadcasting station serving the greater Philadelphia region will be discussing the documentary at our next meeting on October 12th.

Many thanks

Brian

Almost Home Prescreenings (none / 0)

Several nursing homes in Pennsylvania recently held prescreenings of the Almost Home documentary in January. The Communities At Indian Haven, in Indiana, Pennsylvania held the first prescreening on January 4th. People from the community, staff and families and a county commissioner attended the showing. Members of the local press were present as well. Dialogue about the issues brought forth by the film followed. The Communities At Indian Haven has started on its own culture change journey. The administrator, Kim Cobaugh shared a few of the home's own culture change initiatives such as the creation of distinct communities for short term rehab, cognitively impaired and long term care residents.
Another prescreening was held at The Williamsport Home in Williamsport, PA on January 11th. This prescreening was widely attended by several members of the community including the local ombudsman, local business persons representing insurance companies, attorneys, the hospital and other nursing homes.
On January 12th, The Washington County Health Center, in Washington, PA, held the largest prescreening with 62 attendees, 53 of which came from outside the facility, in the community. Representatives from the Quality Insights of Pennsylvania, the local long-term care ombudsman's office, hospice services and other community health services attended the event.
A final prescreening was held in Troy, PA, which is located in the Northern Tier of the state. The Bradford County Manor hosted this event on January 18th in a newly renovated dining area. This home has been active in culture change for several years. A resident who attended the prescreening commented that she recognized alot of similarities between what she saw in the film about culture change and what she has experienced at the home as a resident.
