Update: Here is the Summer 2006 FPN Newsletter.
The Florida Pioneer Network
January 2006

The Beginning

Interest in a Florida culture change coalition began in 2000, thanks to the efforts of the Winter Park Health Foundation and their sponsorship of the first Pioneers for Culture Change in Long Term Care Conference in the state. This initial foundation interest and activity continued in 2001 through a variety of foundation led activities: meetings with Pioneer Network staff and members to further culture change dialogue; stipend provision to three area continuing care retirement communities to conduct an assessment of their facility culture and develop a plan for change; financial assistance for individuals to attend the national Pioneer Network conference; and the holding of a second Florida Pioneer Network conference, Sharing Our Journey, which focused on the topic of staff recruitment and retention. 2002 saw a third and a fourth Florida Pioneer Network conference and 2003 saw the foundation making the decision to provide financial support to the Senior Resource Alliance, the Area Agency on Aging for Central Florida, to formally establish and coordinate the Florida Pioneer Network.

Structure

The Florida Pioneer Network has a steering committee comprised of representatives from the Senior Resource Alliance, State of Florida Long Term Care Ombudsman Program, Florida Health Care Association, Florida Association of Homes for the Aging, Florida Association of Nurse Assistants, Family Forum, Action Pact, Institute for Caregiver Education, Winter Park Health Foundation, and Orlando area long-term care facilities.

Purpose

The Florida Pioneer Network seeks to:

• Create a safe environment for networking, problem solving and support for individuals and organizations involved in the culture change journey;

• Create opportunities for education about values, ideas and practices from a “culture change” framework;

• Foster communication among long-term care facilities and programs and to encourage the sharing of culture change practices;

• Educate local and state officials, regulators, surveyors, the general public and the community about culture change.

Membership

Membership is open to all interested parties. There are over 600 individuals on the FPN mailing list.
