Action Pact's biannual Choreography Change workshop is fast approaching. Join fellow long-term care staff members and culture change pioneers for a week of learning and growth.  The biannual workshop will be held during the week of February 26-March 4 at The Inn at Pine Terrace in historic Oconomowoc, WI.

Participants of the most recent Choreography Change workshop enjoyed a varied and innovative learning experience. During the week of September 25th - October 1st, a small group of leaders from all over the country had the opportunity to spend a week together immersing themselves in the philosophies and principles of culture change. The week is filled with serious study of applications and methods - but within the friendly atmosphere inherent in small learning groups.  The work ranged from heavy discussions of organizational design to the light-hearted but practical skills of WOMMPING (a stress-reducing, mind-opening technique that helps participants lower the body's resistance to change) and team building. Throughout their week in Cedarburg, WI, participants were influenced by the workshop in many different ways and able to return to work with a deepened commitment and know-how on changing their culture to resident directed care.

For example, participant Joan Cody, Director of the Alzheimer's Care Center at the Minnesota Masonic Home in Bloomington, Minnesota now views her job differently.  "Having studied both nursing and political science, I've always felt a disconnect between my two trainings. Nursing always appeared as task oriented while the social sciences offered me a chance to theorize human interactions.  Learning about Culture Change has merged my two passions.   I feel it is possible to not only assess the elder's medical needs but also their societal needs.  Perhaps more importantly, I sincerely believe that as a long term care nurse I am in an ideal position to impact the necessary changes."

Another new theory that was introduced to Joan at the workshop was the idea of recursiveness.  Joan was impressed by idea that learning is a constant process. "The workshop embraced this concept [of recursiveness] and taught us through example." Recursiveness is the concept of demonstrating what is being taught and modeling the concepts as participants are learning them.  "Everything seemed meaningful; the homey bed & breakfast setting, LaVrene and her sister inviting us into their homes, the chance to not only be the student but to teach, getting to know each other and having fun.... all reinforced the ideas that are at the core of Culture Change- community and the value of each individual."

The workshop also gave Joan a chance to network, "The people I met and their individual talents are priceless resources and support as my campus presses forward!"

Another participant, Shannon O'Connell, a masters student of public health administration and policy candidate at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health, also enjoyed the interaction with like-minded long-term care workers that the workshop facilitated. "It is wonderful to meet colleagues from across the country...It is rare to have so many passionate, creative people together for a week long, intensive period."

Shannon was pleased with several other aspects of the workshop, as well.  "The Choreography of Change workshop was a wonderful opportunity to gain knowledge of Culture Change principles and develop as a leader.  The feedback I received from the facilitators and other attendees was very beneficial."

The upcoming Choreography of Culture Change workshop will be held at The Inn at Pine Terrace in Oconomowoc, WI.   The Inn is a historic 18th century mansion modeled after a Vienna castle. The mansion, originally named Mon Bijou, was owned by a member of the Anheuser family. Famous brewing families, as well as Mark Twain and several American Presidents have stayed in the building, so it's easy to see why The Inn is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Inn at Pine Terrace is a few minutes walk from the two sparkling lakes that inspired the name of this quaint Wisconsin town.  Oconomowoc is derived from a Native American word meaning, "where the waters meet." Just past the lakes is the center of Oconomowoc, where Choreography participants can explore the local shops and restaurants in the evenings.  A free afternoon has been scheduled into the Choreography agenda to give participants extra time to roam the city or participate in extracurricular activities.

The Innkeeper has arranged for free passes to the Olympia Health Spa where participants could choose to spend their afternoon enjoying Roman pools, steam rooms, saunas and eucalyptus rooms.  He will also provide participants with a 20% discount on spa services such as massages, facials or aromatherapy. Other possibilities perfect for enjoying the Wisconsin winter include sleigh rides, cross-country skiing and ice-skating. Treasure hunting in nearby antique stores is also an option.  If you don't feel like venturing out into the cold, take advantage of the Inn's wireless internet and relax in the sunroom with your laptop. Regardless of how you choose to spend your free time, your week in Wisconsin is sure to be as relaxing as it is educational.
