Penn State Outreach partnered with the Centre County Geriatric Interest Network (GIN) to host a screening of Almost Home last night in State College, PA. Over 40 people came out on a cold and icy night to watch the film and engage in a dialogue afterwards about how to put Centre County at the forefront of "whole community" culture change efforts.

There were five or six students and the same number of faculty, 15 or so individuals from provider organizations, a handful of public television folks, and several residents from one local CCRC. One elder talked about the need to get those younger 60 and 70 yr olds involved in culture change!

Thanks to support from the Commonwealth Fund and the Retirement Research Foundation, the Pioneer Network will be providing our Getting Started resource to organizations in Centre County who commit to sharing their experiences with it on-line in a special section of the Pioneer Exchange (not visible to the general public). We're already pursuing a similar "learning cohort" approach with a half dozen organizations in Oregon, and we hope to work with many other communities around the country in a similar manner. More on this strategy later...

Several other nursing homes in Pennsylvania recently held prescreenings of the Almost Home documentary in January. The Communities At Indian Haven, in Indiana, Pennsylvania held the first prescreening on January 4th. People from the community, staff and families and a county commissioner attended the showing. Members of the local press were present as well. Dialogue about the issues brought forth by the film followed. The Communities At Indian Haven has started on its own culture change journey. The administrator, Kim Cobaugh shared a few of the home's own culture change initiatives such as the creation of distinct communities for short term rehab, cognitively impaired and long term care residents.

Another prescreening was held at The Williamsport Home in Williamsport, PA on January 11th. This prescreening was widely attended by several members of the community including the local ombudsman, local business persons representing insurance companies, attorneys, the hospital and other nursing homes.

On January 12th, The Washington County Health Center, in Washington, PA, held the largest prescreening with 62 attendees, 53 of which came from outside the facility, in the community. Representatives from the Quality Insights of Pennsylvania, the local long-term care ombudsman's office, hospice services and other community health services attended the event.

A final prescreening was held in Troy, PA, which is located in the Northern Tier of the state. The Bradford County Manor hosted this event on January 18th in a newly renovated dining area. This home has been active in culture change for several years. A resident who attended the prescreening commented that she recognized alot of similarities between what she saw in the film about culture change and what she has experienced at the home as a resident.

Almost Home in Philadelphia (4.00 / 1)

NewCourtland Elder Services partnered with itvs and the Free Library of Philadelphia and had a screening of Almost Home.  95 people showed up at the NewCourtland Education Center on Tuesday, January 31st.  We were very happy with the turn out, considering we were going up against the President.

There was a lively discussion after the screening.  We had a wonderful panel of experts in Long Term Care and Culture Change and we were also fortunate enough to have Brad Lichtenstein, the producer of the film...it was a powerful and a moving documentary...now we are planning our "next steps".
