The criteria for a conference location:

1. able to hold between 40 to 80 people

2. have kitchen facilities that we can use for serving lunch and snacks

3. have ample parking

4. should have a handicapped entrance

5. be willing to let us use the space free or at minimal cost

6. as many of the above as we can find in one place

Also, easy driving directions would be a plus.

Possible locations are:

Churches

Local organizations with meeting areas such as the VFW or AFW

Nursing homes with areas for meeting and ample parking

Community centers

Senior centers are also a possibility but they might be a turn-off for some making it seem a "senior issue" which it is not. Your call on that one.
From Kate (6/4/06):
Please understand that the names under “crew” are just those who are committed to working at each site. It doesn’t let anyone else off the hook!

If you are able to attend and assist, please do so whether your name is on the crew list or not. We’re working on funds to provide motel rooms for our speakers and crew members where they are needed. We’re figuring that most will need accommodations at the Cumberland/Frederick sites and also at the Elkton/Salisbury sites at least. Joe will need accommodations at all sites but he says he doesn’t mind staying at someone’s house. We’ll take him up on that where we can.

Crew for Sept 9,10 (none / 0)

Jerry R. will not be able to attend the Sept. 9 & 10 conferences.  We'll need another crew member for those.  Otto has volunteered as a crew member at most of the conferences.

Salisbury Site (none / 0)

We have been bumped from the Wicomico County Library in favor of an annual book festival.  Since this is a library, one can understand the importance of such an event.   Margie is scouting now for another site.   This should not be a real problem.

The first conferences (none / 0)

Well, we've started.  This has been and continues to be a real learning experience for us.  On Saturday, September 9th and Sunday, September 10th, we held our first two culture change conferences.  The number of people signed up for these conferences changed daily, both up and down, during the last week.  We ended up with approximately 2/3 of the people signing up actually attending.  I'll post the actual statistics here when they are ready so that others attempting this will have some basis of comparison.

Joe was great and his participation really made these conferences an Event.  Carol Benner, consultant to our QIO was also terrific with an overview of the beginnigs of a few projects around Maryland.  Sandee, Family Council leader and our discussion facilitator gave each attendee an opportunity to discuss and process the information from the morning sessions.

With this regional setting, the conferences were both small enough to give all attendees a more intimate contact with presenters and concepts.  There was plenty of time for one-on-one questions, observations, and comments.

From the feed-back both on the Reflections sheets and from emails I've received from attendees, I can say that while we did not have large numbers attending, we definitely planted some vibrant seeds in very fertile ground.  As a first step, this seems to be succeeding well.

We'll see what the next set of conferences brings.

Frederick/Cumberland/Columbia conferences (none / 0)

A mid-week reminder and past attendees spreading the word that this is a conference to attend or both increased attendance at the Frederick and Cumberland conferences.  The Frederick conference was "sold out" for several weeks and only 5 of the folks who registered did not attend.  In Cumberland, we only had 2 of those who registered not attending.  Because of the availabliity of wi-fi, we were able to put reports from the discussion groups at these two conferences on the Pioneer Exchange blog live as we were recording them--an exciting addition to the program.

We are now preparing for the Columbia conference which is double the size of the previous conferences (80 maximum attendees instead of the 40 planned for at the other conferences).  We are not only "sold out" on this one but we are overbooked with 84 registrants.

Karen Schoeneman of CMS will speak at this one as the keynote speaker.  We've added a few things to the program such as Carol Benner's "unscientific scientific study" which somewhat tracks changes in attitudes toward what consititutes Quality as our conference attendees hear our presentations.  Since we are doing so many of these, we've had the opportunity to fine-tune the program 'tweaking' the presentations to eliminate duplications and to tightening up a few slow spots.

All in all, this part of the project is going very well.  Once the Columbia conference is over, we'll have a break.  The last two conferences, scheduled for mid-November, will complete Phase iIof the Project.

We are now starting to really look at Phase II of the Project.   This Phase asks for 5 nursing homes with family councils to plan a culture change project with the family council as an equal player in the development and implementation of the project . It also asks them to share information on how that collaboration worked with each other as the projects progress and with the entire long-term care community once the projects are completed.

So far, we have 0 nursing homes on the list to participate although we have several that are interested.
