Free regional Culture Change education events will be held throughout Florida for long term care professionals in June 2007.

Team members at the Institute for Caregiver Education responded to a need for Culture Change education in Florida by applying for and receiving a grant from the Florida Agency for Healthcare Administration.

This grant makes it possible for up to 100 free registrations in each of the five locations. The grant monies also provide for a Culture Change Toolkit of Institute resources to be made available to every home that sends team members.

Session Descriptions

Culture Change 101 -- This session offers insight into the theory, practice and implementation of Person-Directed Care initiatives including Individualized /Restraint Free Care, Resident-Directed Care, the Eden Alternative, and the Regenerative Community. Also included is a discussion about how to implement Culture Change practices in a regulatory environment. The session concludes with a multimedia presentation exploring the best practices of Culture Change, and includes photography from homes considered to be advanced and early adopters of Person-Directed Care.

Making the Business Case for Culture Change -- This session is designed to answer questions including "Why should we adopt this change?" "How much can it cost?" "How will it affect the bottom line clinically and operationally?" "Will the state and Federal surveyors support it?" and finally, "How will it affect our presence in the market?" Outcomes with regard to survey, human resources, admissions and payor mix will also be discussed.

Person-Directed Care in the First Year of Implementation -- In this session participants will learn some of the key strategies behind the first year of Culture Change implementation. Concepts focused on educating the entire nursing home community including resident interviews, employee orientation, buddy-systems and how to communicate Culture Change to families will be discussed. An overview of the Institute for Caregiver Education's Indicators Survey, which offers an introspective look at an organization's "readiness for change" will also be discussed.

Fine Dining -- This session will introduce the processes and outcomes of transforming institutional dining to a fine dining experience. A variety of approaches will be discussed including fine dining, family-style dining, buffet dining and steam table dining. Clinical impacts on weight gain, wound management, socialization and activity will be introduced. Finally, how to implement these best practices without additional PPD dollars will be discussed.

Community Life and Life Histories -- This session will introduce the concept of a "Community Life" program designed to transform the activities department into a vital and life affirming team. Participants will discover through facilitated discussion how the current role of activities can be transformed to address personal, emotional, physical, intellectual and spiritual fulfillment for both residents and team members. Life Histories are introduced to assist participants in the process of building relationships and creating community through the value of knowing each person.
